[Fiscal Year 2018] APRSAF-25 Space Education Seminar

Seminar on "Space Education for Educators"

The APRSAF Space Education Seminar was held on November 15 (Thurs) and 16 (Fri), 2018, at Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) in Dehradun, India.

The seminar was hosted cooperatively by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and JAXA as an international cooperative program of APRSAF Space Education Working Group. A total of 76 high school teachers, curators of planetariums and science museums, etc. from India and Nepal participated in the seminar.

During the seminar, various lectures by a wide range of specialists from India and Japan were provided along with various sessions using hands-on educational materials.

The schedule on the first day consisted of lectures by JAXA instructors on cutting-edge space science/technology and space education, lectures by Indian Institute of Space Science & Technology (IIST) on remote sensing and social development, and a practical session of water rocket, which was realized upon wishes of the hosts to disseminate the practice among schools in India. During the night, a lecture on how to use planispheres was presented by a lecturer who was engaged in space education among private companies in India.

A variety of programs on the second day included active learnings using solar system exploration and remote sensing presented mainly by lecturers of ISRO and Indian government, lectures on the latest space activities in India, and reports on the current situation of space education outreach by field workers. JAXA presented a hands-on session of vacuum experiments using simple vacuum devices.

During tea and lunch times, participants actively enjoyed conversation and exchanged information over local cuisines and sweets.

According to the questionnaire survey following the seminar, 96% of the participants were highly or extremely satisfied with the contents of the seminar and quality of lectures, while 86% considered that what they learned at the seminar were immediately useful for their work on a daily basis. There were also many requests to hold this kind of seminars continuously, which are being discussed positively.
